Dr. Montessori believed that human beings possess physical, intellectual and spiritual dimensions. In order to fully educate a person, all of these dimensions must be considered. Children are born with the ability to be curious, creative, peaceful and intelligent. In designing the elementary program, she intended to nurture the inherent curiosity of the elementary child, inspire a sense of wonder, and develop a generous and peaceful spirit.

The Montessori elementary class brings children of different age levels together. The lower elementary encompasses grades 1-3, or ages 6-9. Some advantages to this grouping are:
  • Children can always find peers who are working at their current level.
  • Classrooms include curriculums to cover the entire span of interests and abilities up through the oldest and most advanced students creating an enriched learning environment for everyone.
  • Younger children are constantly stimulated by the interesting work of the older students.
  • Older students serve as helpers and role models for the younger ones. This provides extra practice, which leads to mastery as well as an opportunity to build self-esteem.

At the elementary level, learning continues to be a hands-on and group learning experience. The advanced Montessori materials are intended to introduce complex and abstract concepts. Their goal is to lead the child away from dependency on concrete models and towards the solving of problems abstractly. All of the traditional subjects including reading, writing, mathematics, science, geography and history make up our curriculum.

The elementary child has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Therefore a Montessori elementary education is meant to provide your child with an interrelated knowledge of all topics rather than a collection of memorized facts. It also teaches the child a systematic framework for studying and researching all topics that interest them. This does not mean that the core academics of reading, writing, and arithmetic are not emphasized. Rather, these skills are refined in the elementary years through applied work which starts with the child’s own questions about exploring and learning about the world around him.
